Biochar for clay soils

Our biochar for clay soils formulation permanently sequesters carbon and transforms your soils. Our biochar, rock dust and microbial mix is made from pristine Australian woody sources, premium rock dust and other nutrients. This formulation will give you immediate microbial and mineral benefits in the first year and will bring biodynamic benefits in the next and all subsequent years. Not suitable for highly alkaline soils. Try our mix for alkaline soils if you are in an area with high sodium, high calcium soils.

Our biochar is the least amount of effort you can expend to permanently transform your soil. More permanent soil carbon than compost, less bulk and weight and perfectly convenient. Just sprinkle on, rake lightly and stand back. The benefits of it will just compound in years to come.

How to apply

There are several ways to apply. Either sprinkle lightly at a rate of one handful per square metre, then add mulch or bark litter. If you are able to convert the entire growing layer, then apply at a rate of 4 litres per square metre to the top 5 to 10 cm of soil. When preparing new gardens or lawns, add to the bulk loam at a rate of 10% by volume.

When planting new trees in clay soil, put a 2 litre tub of clay soil formulation biochar into the planting hole of your new tree. Then add a 3 cm layer of loam before placing the root ball on top.

Use a 5cm layer at 20% concentration on all exposed areas of drab clay soil in your garden to spruce up the visual appearance of your garden. It will permanently transform it to give it a strong, dark, rich look. This provides a better contrast for the other colours in your garden especially lush greens and whites.

Why this clay soil formulation?

We found that heavy clay soils require larger chunks of char to help break clumps and make the whole lot more friable. We also add more dolomite as a clay breaker, and enhance the phosphate levels with organic phosphates.
